Work Schedule:

  • 40 hours per week – based on a 4-1/2 day work week.

(7:30 am – 5:30 pm Monday – Thursday; 7:30 am – 11:30 pm Friday)

Job Description for CAD Drafter/Designer

 

CAD drafter/designer, working in conjunction under the direction of engineers, is responsible for creating detailed drawings that are utilized in the planning and construction of civil engineering projects including utility (water and wastewater) lines, pump stations, treatment plants and similar projects.  These detailed technical drawings incorporate the input of engineers and surveyors and can specify dimensions, codes, materials, and construction methods.  Duties will also include the preparation of survey plats, drawings, topographic maps and site layouts from survey field notes.

 

CAD Drafter/Designer Duties and Responsibilities

 

The are general duties and responsibilities of the CAD drafter/designer is expected to perform include:

 

  • Uses CAD software (Civil 3D) to create detailed drawings that include dimensions, procedures and required materials.  Also uses views and angles to show the association between system components, often consulting co-workers regarding design and layouts.
  • Coordinates the collection of data and incorporates such information into drawings, maps and schematics, while consulting with engineers, surveyors and other workers involved to prepare drawings.
  • Takes care of complex drafting and designing assignments with little to no supervision and reviews drawings for accuracy and completeness.  Also, maintains all revisions of project drawings.
  • Creates drawings and layouts from verbal and written instructions from the project engineer.  Examines and checks engineering drawings to comply with company standards.
  • Incorporates data from surveys and reports to prepare drawings, as well as makes calculations for preparation of drawings and designs.
  • Works closely with engineers, designers and other drafters to ensure the maintenance of coordination design efforts.  Completes project responsibilities within scope, schedule and budget.
  • Coordinates and communicates with other professionals to understand design concepts and establish requirements.  When a deficiency is found, revises designs to eliminate problems.

 

Willingness and ability to perform other duties, such as, but not limited to:

  • field data collection and assessment
  • hydraulic flow tests
  • construction observation
  • field surveying, under the supervision of a licensed surveyor
  • attend project meetings
  • other duties as required

 

Important CAD Drafter/Designer Qualities

To be effective and efficient as a CAD drafter/designer, one should have the following competencies:

 

Plan Reading

Must have the ability to read and understand construction drawings of various complexities.

 

Detail-Oriented

A CAD drafter/designer should pay close attention to detail, so the drawings being prepared will be technically accurate.

 

Technical Skills

Must have the ability to work with Autodesk Civil 3D, Microsoft Office, and other computer software as required for day to day operations.

 

Math Skills

These are important since working with technical drawings requires mathematical calculations involving angles and weights, not to mention costs.

 

Critical-Thinking Skills

A drafter/designer helps engineers by identifying problems with designs and plans and recommends solutions.

 

Time-Management Skills

As a CAD drafter/designer, one works under strict deadlines, but should still be able to produce the required output in accordance with schedules.

 

Interpersonal Skills

This is a basic, considering that a drafter/designer works closely with other professionals to ensure the accuracy of final plans and drawings.

 

Requirements

All applicants must have a valid SC/NC driver’s license

 

CAD drafter/designer will be expected to dress appropriately for the work tasks to be performed, maintain acceptable hygiene, and be capable of maintaining a prompt work schedule

 

CAD drafter/designer should have completed at least a two-year associate degree program at a technical school or community college.  Architecture or engineering programs can also provide the necessary education requirements.  Coursework may include mathematics, science, drawing, and design.

 

Experience with and engineering firm specializing in design of civil engineering projects is preferred but is not required.

 

CAD Drafter/Designer Salary

Salary range is negotiable based on education, training level, and experience.
